10 tips on what it takes to create an online community

Lithium have just released a White Paper entitled, Online Communities: Best Practices and Deployment Tips for Reducing Costs and Increasing Overall Customer Satisfaction.

At a glance it looks like a useful report, with easy to read and use information.

The paper provides 10 tips on what it takes to create on online community:

  1. Have a business owner who oversees budget and sets direction. Online community, people, speech bubble
  2. Have a community manager who conducts planning and day-to-day decision-making.
  3. Have a moderator who sets tone, enforces rules, and helps users.
  4. Define roles for staff and users and configure software appropriately.
  5. Create a set of comprehensive guidelines.
  6. Define actions that will take place when issues occur.
  7. Make community visible to potential users.
  8. Create the proper structure and atmosphere to engage users.
  9. Manage “superusers” differently from other users.
  10. Focus measurement on business value.

All 10 points are valid, and definitely items you’ll need to give serious thought if you hope to build an engaged online community that contributes to your business objectives.

There’s also an explanation of what the business case is for creating an online community:

  • Avoided costs

The reign of The Green Eyed Monster begins!

This is the beginning of a very exciting journey for me. My very own social media blog. I do feel as though there are too many people out there who are self-espoused social media experts and too many businesses put too much trust in those who speak loudest, rather than those who speak the truth. I do not proclaim myself as a social media expert, rather a social media enthusiast, or proably even a fanatic. This blog will have a heavy focus on social media and online communities which are my greatest passion, there’ll also be the occasional blog about design and user experience as well as many other things to do with the wonderful world wide web.

I hope you’ll excuse my blog design & layout for the moment, I will be updating it over the next few months, but I just couldn’t wait to start blogging again!

If you’re interested to find out a bit more about me read my Who Am I? section or find out how to get in touch with me on my Contact page.

Celebrity fan communities done right: Zachary Quinto

Originally posted at freshchat.com.au

Whilst checking on my Facebook news feed this morning, I saw a link from the Zachary Quinto fan page to his new community. I already knew that Quinto was active on social media, so was intrigued to take a look and see what his community is all about.

Launched only a few hours ago (27 July USA time), the Zach Quinto Community is something akin to Facebook, a stream of his other social network accounts, with fans able to join, create an avatar and profile, comment and add their own posts to the stream. It’s very simple, and yet a very effective way for fans to keep an eye on what Quinto is up to and be able to interact with him. The community is hosted neatly within the Zachary Quinto Website.

Quinto’s other social media endeavours are also working well. He’s on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and YouTube (as a co-founder of Before The Door productions). Of course, it’s not enough just to create accounts on every social network out there. Quinto (or perhaps his minions) do an excellent job of keeping in touch with fans not only in the form of status updates, but also by sharing photos and videos.

A job very well done.

Have you seen any other celebrities who are doing a great job in social media?
